Chepang, Majhi communities refuse govt assistance for toilet construction

Chepang and Majhi communities of Ghyalchowk VDC in Gorkha district have rejected grant assistance provided by the government of Nepal for constructing toilets, saying that the assistance is insufficient.

The District Development Committee (DDC), Gorkha allocates Rs 1,600 to each Chepang and Majhi family of Ghyalchowk for the toilet construction as a part of its campaign of announcing the district 'open-defecation free zone'.

“It requires over Rs 20,000 to build a toilet and the government assistance does not provide any relief for us,” a local Dil Bahadur Chepang said.

Chepang demanded that they should get sufficient assistance from the government for the construction of toilets.

But the DDC said an increment in the assistance is not possible. “Though the government provides Rs 1,200, the concerned VDC adds Rs 400 on its behalf, thus making a total of Rs 1600 grant,” said Local Development Officer Mahesh Baral.
